This presentation introduces the Labour Market Intelligence Partnership (LMIP). It then supplies an overview of the South African Youth Panel Study (SAYPS) Report which analyses the characteristics of learners making different transitions and explore key predictors of these pathways to report on four distinct groups of learners: Smooth; Staggered; Stuck; Stopped. The briefing highlights the Research Background through two questions: What are longitudinal studies? Why the need for a longitudinal panel study? The main Research Questions are stated a follows: What are the main activity choices of young people over time and how do learners move through the education system? - Transition matrices. What are the characteristics of young people following different pathways through school? - Descriptive statistics and correlations. How do individual characteristics, family background and school factors predict educational pathways? - Logistic regression. The briefing then analyses the SAYPS data in detail, before sharing some key findings, conclusions and what this means for policy implications.
